Available trainings: QPR and ASIST
What is QPR?
Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) is a suicide prevention gatekeeper training. A gatekeeper is someone who is equipped to recognize the warning signs of someone who may be contemplating suicide. Gatekeepers can be anyone and does not require or ask a person to take on the role of a mental health therapist or counselor. QPR aims to teach gatekeepers how to:
- Recognize the warning signs of suicide
- Offer hope
- Know how to get help (where to refer)
How do I get QPR trained?
The QPR Training will take about an hour and is no cost to your agency/group. The trainer will need a space to show a video as well as a PowerPoint. We are able to travel on-site and are able to do day or evening trainings. Please contact Sarah Derwin at (906) 315-2621 or Emily Pratt at (906) 315-2630 to set up a training for your business, organization, or your community group.
What is ASIST?
Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants don’t need any formal training to attend the workshop—anyone 16 or older can learn and use the ASIST model. ASIST aims to teach gatekeepers how to:
- Understand the ways that personal and societal attitudes affect views on suicide and interventions
- Provide guidance and suicide first aid to a person at risk in ways that meet their individual safety needs
- Identify the key elements of an effective suicide safety plan and the actions required to implement it
How do I get ASIST trained?
Participants are required to complete two full days of training. If you are interested in ASIST training for your agency/organization you may contact Sarah Derwin at (906) 315-2630 or email@example.com to discuss further. You can also check the national training list here for upcoming trainings in the United States.
